Although its operational record was somewhat mixed, in general, the P-38 was a fast, powerful and capable twin boom aircraft that performed well in a wide range of roles. The aircraft had twin booms with the engines mounted forward and a single, central nacelle containing the pilot and armament. The engine sounds were a unique, rather quiet "whuffle," because the exhausts were muffled by the turbochargers of the twin Allison V12s. The canopy could not be opened without severe buffeting, so pilots were often too hot in the tropics. In northern Europe, the distance of the engines from the cockpit prevented effective heating of the cockpit, thus it was always either too hot or too cold. It is an American supersonic jet trainer,also, the world's first supersonic trainer and to date, is also the most produced. The T-38 is of conventional configuration, with a small, low, long-chord wing, a single vertical stabilizer, and tricycle undercarriage. In May 1963, Beechcraft began test flights of the proof-of-concept Model 87, a modified Queen Air with Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-6 engines. The F-models featured the T-tail of the Model 200 King Air mated to the fuselage and wings of the E90, with PT6A-135 engines of 750 shp (560 kW) driving four-bladed propellers. The F90 prototype flew on 16 January 1978 and 203 production versions followed between 1979 and 1983, when the F90 was superseded by the F90-1. Length 12 Inches History: Grumman was working on a successor to the F4F Wildcat well before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. While the F4F was a capable fighter, early air battles revealed the Japanese A6M Zero was more maneuverable and possessed a better rate of climb than the F4F. The F4F did have some advantages over the Zero. Wildcats were able to absorb a tremendous amount of damage compared to the Zero, and had better armament. The F4F was also much faster in a dive than the Zero, an advantage Wildcat pilots used frequently to elude attacking Zeros. These advantages carried over into the F6F and, combined with other improvements, created a fighter that outclassed the Zero almost completely. The contract for the prototype XF6F-1 was signed on 30 June 1941. The F6F was originally to be given the Wright R-2600 Cyclone engine of 1,700 hp (1,268 kW), but based on combat experience of F4F Wildcat and Zero encounters, Grumman decided to further improve their new fighter to overcome the A6M Zero's dominance in the Pacific theater. Grumman installed the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp 2,000 hp (1,500 kW) estimating a 25% increase in performance would result. The first Cyclone-equipped prototype (02981) flew on 26 June 1942 while the first Double Wasp-equipped aircraft, the XF6F-3 (02982) had its first flight on 30 July 1942. Proposed at the same time as the first Hellcat prototypes, the XF6F-2 incorporated a turbo-supercharger, but performance gains were only slight and until fleet demands for improvements in speed arose, this variant, along with the two-speed supercharger-equipped XF6F-3, languished. However, later F6F-4 and F6F-5 variants did benefit from these initial development programs. Like the Wildcat, the Hellcat was designed for ease of manufacture and ability to withstand significant damage. A total of 212 lb (96 kg) of cockpit armor was fitted to aid pilot survival, as well as a bullet-resistant windshield and armor around the engine oil tank and oil cooler. Self-sealing fuel tanks further reduced susceptibility to fire and often allowed damaged aircraft to return home. The U.S. Navy's all-time leading ace, Captain David McCampbell USN (Ret) scored all his 34 victories in the Hellcat. He once described the F6F as "... an outstanding fighter plane. History For 1953, Castoldi comissioned an 800kg-class three-point hydroplane hull to be built by Cantieri Timossi, and for the engine, he turned to the new up and comers of the auto racing scene ...Scuderia Ferrari. Loud, fast, and ridiculous for their time, the 1940s racecars were beginning to draw attention in the masses, allowing engineers to display their prowess while providing yet another means of entertainment to the wealthy and powerful. As automobile manufacturers were on the rise, the already-popular speedboat racing industry incorporated the attractive auto engines into their competition boats. The Ferrari Hydroplane was one such example. Achille Castoldi, a wealthy boat privateer, set the world speed record of 81.1 mph in the 400kg class with his boat “Arno,” a 400kg class with a Romeo type 158 engine. In 1953, Castoldi decided to concentrate on speed records and commissioned the beginning of the Ferrari Hydroplane: an 800kg class hydroplane to be built by Cantieri Timossi. For the engine he turned to Scuderia Ferrari of the auto racing industry. Ferrari supplied Castoldi with a ridiculous type 375 V-12 Grand Prix Engine, the same engine that powered the Ferrari cars of the early 1950s. At a savage 385 horsepower, the engine of the Ferrari Hydroplane could spin the propeller at 10,000 RPM! Castoldi destroyed both the competition, and his old record, setting a two-way top speed record of 140.74 mph.

The German battleship Bismarck is one of the most famous warships of the Second World War. The lead ship of her class and named after the 19th century German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, Bismarck displaced more than 50,000 tons fully loaded and was the largest warship then commissioned. Bismarck only took part in one operation during her brief career. She and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen left Gotenhafen (Gdynia) on the morning of 19 May, 1941 for Operation Rheinübung, during which she was to have attempted to intercept and destroy convoys in transit between North America and Great Britain. When the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen attempted to break out into the Atlantic, the two ships were discovered by the Royal Navy and brought to battle in the Denmark Strait. During the short engagement, the British battlecruiser HMS Hood, flagship of the Home Fleet and pride of the Royal Navy, was sunk after several minutes of firing.
